May Cultural Festival to present Beethoven’s Ninth on historic date

Although Guadalajara’s annual Festival de Mayo is several weeks away, devotees of culture are advised to book tickets for some important performances soon.

pg7c copyThe 2024 festival—the 27th—celebrates Beethoven, and will feature all of his 32 piano sonatas performed in six concerts.

Additionally, the festival celebrates the 200th anniversary of the premiere of his Ninth Symphony, which took place took place at the Vienna Kärnthnerthor Theater on May 7, 1824.

To mark this historic moment in musical history, the May Festival opens with a concert at the Teatro Degollado of the famous Ninth, most appropriately on Tuesday, May 7.  The concert will be repeated on May 8 and 9.

The anniversary concerts will feature the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco, under the baton of musical director José Luis Castillo and the Coro Municipal de Zapopan, who will be led by invited director Gerardo Rábago.

The soloists are soprano Sophie Gordeladze (from Georgia), mezzosoprano Nora Souruzian (Canada),  tenor Peter Lodahl (Denmark) and bass Grigory Soloviov (United States).
