Melaque marks 6th anniversary of cultural center

The labor of love on the new mural at the Centro des Artes y Cultura (CENAC) in San Patricio Melaque is now complete. It has been an interesting week watching it develop from a wall sketch to a spectacular finished mural.

pg14aThe center was established six years ago to promote Mexican culture and art for all age groups.  Classes are offered in art, music, reading, writing, painting and all types of arts and crafts.  Classes are free for Mexican children.

The mural is by artist Humberto Rozales Mercado (@humbertodaniel.rozalesmercado) and Leonel Brambilla Godoy (of Leonel’s Restaurant in CENAC) and contains a series of important elements. I asked them to explain their vision to me.

“Music forms the foundation of the fabric of Mexican culture,” said Rozales. “The notes coming from the saxophonist are a tribute to a very popular Mexican song (“Cielito Lindo”). He plays with fish surrounding his feet, representing the Melaque community and its ties to the ocean. The notes call on Mexican parents and children to come and experience what the center offers.”
