PV welcomes female tennis players to 1st WTA tournament

Puerto Vallarta is hosting a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) event for the first time.

The 125-category tournament takes place at the Parque Parota complex in the North Hotel Zone from Monday, February 19 to Sunday, February 25, and will offer US$110,000 in prize money. There will be 32 players in the singles event, and eight doubles pairs. Play begins each day at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at boletomóvil.com.

Although the event won’t attract the top names in the sport, some high-ranked players have confirmed their participation, organizers say.  They include Amanda Anisimova of the United States, Renata Zarazua of Mexico and Emiliana Arango of Colombia who reached the quarter final of the WTA 1000 event in Guadalajara last year, losing to eventual winner Maria Sakkari of Greece. The Parque Parota has hosted four ATP Challenger (men’s) tournaments since 2018. The central court seats 1,100 spectators.
