Benito Juárez remembered with long holiday weekend

Monday, March 18 is a national statutory holiday commemorating the birth of Benito Juarez on March 21, 1806.

Civic ceremonies will be held at lakeside and elsewhere in the country to honor Juárez, the liberal lawyer and statesman of Zapotec ancestry who served as Mexico’s 26th president from 1858 until his death in 1872.

He is remembered as a distinguished leader of the reform movement and national hero. Salaried workers are entitled to a day off with regular pay. Banks, schools government offices and some businesses close for the day.

Officially scheduled on the third Monday of the month,  it makes for an extended three-day holiday weekend.
