American School embraces its artistic traditions

Art in the spotlight

Those attending the art auction at Manifesto Gallery on Friday night before the American School Art Fest Saturday, March 2, were treated to regal services and complete histories of the paintings, prints and sculptures on offer.

Many pieces were by artists in the Art Fest and a few were by ASFG students or stellar artists who are no longer living. Starting prices sometimes seemed high and many pieces did not sell, but the atmosphere was comfortable and congenial.

A day devoted to art

Saturday, March 2, the 35th American School Art Fest attracted onlookers and customers both connected and unconnected with the school. Ricardo Sanchez, who is scheduled to teach a class at the Lake Chapala Society, was selling masterful watercolors and architectural ink drawings.

Michael Baker was showing his vibrantly colored, molded sculptural pieces for wall and tabletop, among dozens of other artists and galleries.

The event also featured highly valued original drawings by Diego Rivera that were not for sale, but form part of a collection of the Informador newspaper. Participating artists say the cost of a booth in the Art Fest is high, but they do it to build reputation and exposure.
