As images of police officers clearing demonstrators from U.S. university campuses were broadcast around the world this week, reality set in that many young Americans are embracing social activism—and the Palestinian cause in particular—in a way not seen since the late 1960s.
In major Mexican cities, demonstrations by pro-Palestinian groups have also been held since Israel began its offensive in Gaza in the aftermath of the unprecedented October 2023 cross-border attack by Hamas militants in which an estimated 1100 people—including many women and children—were slain and dozens of hostages taken, most of whom are still being held. This latest chapter in the Israel-Gaza conflict has persisted for six months, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties, with Israel’s military actions causing immense destruction, pushing at least half of Gaza’s population into famine-like conditions. Despite pressure from its Western allies, Israel has mostly resisted allowing humanitarian aid into the enclave.
